K-pop Idols Who Broke Beauty Standards and Inspired Fans

Hwasa
Hwasa doesn’t fit into Korean beauty standards at all. In her early days, she was body-shamed and called ugly. However, her unwavering confidence didn’t let her be shaken by these kinds of comments. While Koreans like to appear as white as possible, Hwasa kept her darker-toned skin away from bleaching. She takes pride in her tan skin. As for her body, Korea has a skinny body standard, but Hwasa has a comparably thick body, and she didn’t even try to fit into their standard. She tends to embrace every so-called flaw of her body. This is what makes her different from others. She shows how we should love ourselves.

Jennie
Korea has a very talked-about beauty standard—the V-shaped jawline; nevertheless, Jennie has chubby cheeks (dumpling cheeks) and a round face. She didn’t try to follow the V-shape trend and shines brightest in her own beauty. She is confident enough in her dumpling cheeks. Chubby cheeks makes her look younger then her real age.

Felix
Koreans are known for their spotless skin, especially celebrities who have flawless skin. Felix is different here—he has beautiful skin but with lots of freckles. While people tend to hide their freckles or any kind of spots Felix embraces his freckles bravely, breaking traditional beauty standards. Even with full makeup on his freckles can be seen prominently.

Yeji
One of the most followed beauty standards is double eyelids. Yeji has unique cat-like eyes that give her an unusual look. While most people follow the double eyelid trend and go for surgery, Yeji didn’t follow this beauty standard and embraces her cat/monolid eyes with confidence. Now her cat eye has her won admireres.

Jihyo
Jihyo likes tan skin, which doesn’t follow Korean beauty standards. She has quite fair skin, but she goes for skin tanning. Surprisingly she appears in front of camera with darker face shade than her body. Jihyo also has a quite masculine body. She doesn’t follow beauty standards. Instead, she follows her own will.

Kai
Kai embraces his dark skin passionately. He doesn’t bleach his skin to follow beauty standards. He is even vocal about loving one’s true self and doesn’t care about beauty standards at all.

RM
RM doesn’t fit into Korean beauty standards, and some people even called him ugly(!). But RM never feels shaken by these comments and doesn’t try to fit into any standard. He celebrates his beauty in his own way.
